The effect of Naturo fruit bars
(NFB) in altering the key metabolic
parameters in type-2 diabetes
mellitus was tested in a randomized
open-label short-term (2 weeks) and
a long-term (12 weeks) clinical
trial on healthy volunteers and
type-2 diabetics.
Design of the study: In a dose
escalation study, 13 healthy
volunteers and 10 type-2 diabetics
were given 2, 3, 4 fruit bars on day
0, 7 and 14 and blood glucose levels
were determined at time ‘zero’ and
two hours of consumption of NFB. In
the long-term trial, 18 patients of
type-2 diabetics consumed two NFB
per day for 12 weeks, and blood
glucose (fasting and post-prandial),
insulin, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C),
lipid profile and adiposity were
determined on day ‘zero’ and at the
end of twelve weeks.
Results: The short-term study showed
that consumption of 2, 3 or 4 NFB
did not elevate blood glucose levels
in healthy subjects and in type-2
diabetics. Administration of two NFB
to type-2 diabetics for 12 weeks did
not increase the fasting and post-prandial
glucose levels. Other parameters
such as cholesterol, HDL
cholesterol, LDL cholesterol,
triglycerides and body mass index
were not altered in type-2
diabetics.
Conclusion The study demonstrates
that the NFB did not increase the
blood glucose levels and thus can be
used as a substitute for healthy
food in type-2 diabetics without any
undesirable effects.
