Objective: The
effects of apple consumption on
erythrocyte adenosine deaminase
activity of elderly subjects were
investigated in this study.
Methods: In the
present study, fifteen elderly
subjects (mean age 71.86 +/- 4.17)
participated in the study. They
consumed an apple a day for a month
and then, their erythrocyte ADA
activities were measured before and
after this period in order to
evaluate possible effect of apple
consumption on ADA activity.
Results: It has
been observed that erythrocyte ADA
activity increased after apple
consumption indicating that apple
can strengthen immune system of
older subjects through ADA
activation.
Conclusion: This
means it is advisable to consume an
apple a day in elderly. However, it
is known that on average, most
people consume approx. 20 pounds of
apples a year, which comes to around
1 apple a week. Unfortunately, while
an apple a week is better than
nothing, it is nowhere close to
being able to extract all the
advantages apples have to offer.
Eating apples is part of balanced
and healthy diet that will increase
longevity.
