Aim of the work: studying the diuretic effect of different nutraceuticals from selected parts from parsley, olive, purslane, corn and broad beans. Methodology: The study included the effect of oral administration of these nutraceuticals in 3 different doses (500, 600 and 750 mg/kg) on urine volume of rats. Scoping our work on parsley seeds and olive leaves, the effect of co-administration of vitamin C (200 mg/kg) with their functional components was assessed. Their saluretic, natriuretic and carbonic anhydrase inhibition indices was studied compared to furosemide. The effect of their long term administration on serum minerals and lipids, kidney and liver functions, nutritional parameters and their safety through acute toxicity were assessed.

Results: The majority of the tested nutraceuticals produced higher urine volume compared to control. Co-administration of vitamin C with parsley seeds and olive leaves nutraceuticals increased their effect on urine volume. Urinary electrolytes produced by groups given nutraceuticals from parsley seeds and olive leaves were significantly lower than furosemide but significantly higher than control. Nutraceuticals from parsley seed and olive leaves showed a significant high creatinine clearance than control. Safety of these nutraceuticals was confirmed through acute toxicity test and long term administration.

Conclusion: The majority of the tested nutraceuticals showed diuretic activity with different degrees. Vitamin C had synergistic diuretic action. nutraceuticals from parsley seed and olive leaves showed complete safety. The diuretic activity may be attributed to the presence of vitamin C, volatile oil, flavonoids, sterols and the high Na/K ratio that were identified in the plants.
